4th Grade Learning
Mathematics
Our math classroom will emphasize making sense of problems, perseverance, and communication of thinking. We will focus on building deep understanding of essential math concepts, as well as fluency with critical math skills. Important concepts for 4th graders include: using place value understanding to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division situations, developing a deep understanding of fraction equivalence, and applying understanding of angles and line relationships (i.e. parallel and perpendicular lines) to classify shapes.
Reading
During our daily Readers’ Workshop time will be shared among whole group study of grade level standards and on-level text, guided reading in leveled small groups, and differentiated independent work time. Since the best way to improve reading achievement is to read a great deal from a wide range of genres, students will set reading goals and track their progress over the year.
Writing
Throughout the year students write in various genres including: opinion writing, informational writing (including research), narrative writing, to explain thinking, and in response to reading. Through the year our writing projects and routines will emphasize clarity of purpose and organization of ideas as well as a love of language. Word Study (spelling) will be differentiated based on an inventory of each child’s skill level on the learning progression. Please see the attached file “Why Word Study?”

Science
The science course of study includes diverse and intriguing topics: energy and circuits, our solar system, classification of organisms, fossils, and ecosystems. We explore these topics through labs, problem solving, reading and writing, and discussion.
Social Studies
4th graders study Colorado history, geography, economy, and government. We practice non-fiction reading, thinking, and writing strategies by studying historical and current events.
